Ten steps to create a healthy vegetable patch

VEGETABLE PATCHDr Ross Mars is a well know teacher and permaculture expert who spent time at Boshack Outback. During his stay we he helped us to create a healthy vegetable patch. Here is what we learned during his stay.

  1. The vegetable patch base can be raised or lowered depending on your preference. If you create a raised patch it is recommended that you have raised wall.
  2. Try and make the base 1.2 metres wide at the most
  3. You need wettable soil to successfully grow vegetables. To test the soil pour a cup of water into a small hole, if you can count to 10 before the water is completely absorbed then it is not to satisfaction.
  4. Use non wetting soil – wax
  5. Choose your preferred vegetables and fruit.
  6. Do not plant the same things too close together as they attract insects
  7. Plant tall plants as shade
  8. When planting, push soil against roots to minimise oxygen around roots as they dry out
  9.    Drown plants in water before planting and separate the plants.
  10. Use cross sticks to train plants to grow up

Tips

  •         Don’t plant Kale and Broccoli in rows. Mix it up to disguise plants from bugs, butterflies and other pesticides.
  •         Tomato works well with basil

We are grateful to have Dr Ross come and help us set up our garden as we are able to use the plants in our cooking. Our vegetable patch is now thriving!

Yoga Retreat – Farmstay Perth

12967507_10153621594678041_9089442400483065822_oRecently we held a Yoga/Meditation/Nutrition Retreat overlooking the lake which is the perfect place to be in the moment and enjoy nature. Satyen was the instructor and he is extremely knowledgeable as he is a medical doctor and Yoga teacher. Satyen is known for his unconventional teaching style, passion, dedication, with a profound knowledge in the vast field of yoga and nutrition. He also has a good sense of humour which made for a fun weekend.

The weekend started with everyone arriving on the Friday afternoon and settling into their accommodation. A quick welcome followed by a delicious vegetarian meal. Then we were straight into learning about deep relaxation techniques. The perfect way to wind down before bed, drifting off to sleep while listen the sounds of the bush.

Saturday was a full day learning many different techniques and all about nutrition. The day included light stretching, meditation, yoga, yogic breaching exercises, mantras (sound vibrations) and nutrition.

The yoga practise catered to everyone as it suited every level from the beginner to the advanced. Yogic breathing techniques energised the body and balanced emotions.

Sunday started with light stretching, meditation, yoga and lots more information on nutrition. We ended the weekend in a closing circle and everyone really enjoyed the weekend.

Yoga and meditation are great ways to slow down, quieten the mind, strengthen the body and bringing our minds into present time. It was a successful weekend with delicious vegetarian meals and the outlook onto the lake was a perfect backdrop to do our yoga practice.

Wild Nature Play

Boshack Outback is your ultimate wild nature play ground with 300 acres of land that features a fresh water lake,  pristine bushland and the property is surrounded by Wattening Springs Nature Reserve.

In today’s society children are spending less time in nature and more time indoors on modern technology. We want to change that and at Boshack Outback, we want our children enjoying the land and playing in nature. We want them to explore, use their imagination and give them the opportunity to be free range kids!

At Boshack Outback children can explore the bush, build cubby houses, catch tadpoles and frogs, feel the mud between their toes in the lake, catch fish and look for turtles. The options are endless and children are only limited by their imagination.

Fishing the Boshack

As per Nature Play WA research has proven that children benefit from playing in natural surroundings and you may be surprised at how much of a positive effect it can have on our children.

 Benefits of Wild Nature Play

  • Children who play regularly in natural settings are sick less often. Mud, sand, water, leaves, sticks, pine cones and gum nuts can help to stimulate children’s immune system as well as their imagination.
  • Children who spend more time outside tend to be more physically active and less likely to be overweight.
  • Children who play in natural settings are more resistant to stress; have lower incidence of behavioural disorders, anxiety and depression; and have a higher measure of self-worth.
  • Children who play in natural settings play in more diverse, imaginative and creative ways and show improved language and collaboration skills. Single use, repetitive play equipment becomes boring quickly.
  • Natural, irregular and challenging spaces help kids learn to recognise, assess and negotiate risk and build confidence and competence.
  • Children who play in nature have more positive feelings about each other.
  • Bullying behaviour is greatly reduced where children have access to diverse nature-based play environments.
  • Symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder are reduced after contact with nature.

With all these facts proving the benefits of wild nature play take action now and book your family a weekend getaway and stay at Boshack Outback!
