What the Penrhos Students had to say

The students from Penrhos Collage recently spent the day at Boshack Outback and had a wonderful experience. Below is what Year 4 students Sian and Hayley had to say.

Year 4 Boshack Excursion

During the lead-up to our Boshack excursion we felt excited and nervous. We had to get up about 5:45am to get to school before sunrise. On the bus ride, which took two hours, we sang and chanted and we had some puzzles which we had to figure out. We also shouted out animal names as we saw them in the paddocks that we passed. We were over the moon when we finally got to Boshack. After a brief introduction, we had billy tea, which one of our tour guides swung around in the billy to make tea leaves sink to the bottom. For morning tea we also had a delicious damper with jam and cream, banana bread and fresh fruit. After and longer and more informative introduction, we got to try some witchetty grubs and herded sheep across the paddock and into a pen. After a scrumptious lunch of burgers, the group swapped activities. We then held some yabbie and walked through a paperbark forest. It was then time to board the bus for the return journey to Penrhos. As the day was an amazing experience, we were all extremely sad to leave. We would recommend this adventure to anyone.

Ten steps to create a healthy vegetable patch

VEGETABLE PATCHDr Ross Mars is a well know teacher and permaculture expert who spent time at Boshack Outback. During his stay we he helped us to create a healthy vegetable patch. Here is what we learned during his stay.

  1. The vegetable patch base can be raised or lowered depending on your preference. If you create a raised patch it is recommended that you have raised wall.
  2. Try and make the base 1.2 metres wide at the most
  3. You need wettable soil to successfully grow vegetables. To test the soil pour a cup of water into a small hole, if you can count to 10 before the water is completely absorbed then it is not to satisfaction.
  4. Use non wetting soil – wax
  5. Choose your preferred vegetables and fruit.
  6. Do not plant the same things too close together as they attract insects
  7. Plant tall plants as shade
  8. When planting, push soil against roots to minimise oxygen around roots as they dry out
  9.    Drown plants in water before planting and separate the plants.
  10. Use cross sticks to train plants to grow up

  •         Don’t plant Kale and Broccoli in rows. Mix it up to disguise plants from bugs, butterflies and other pesticides.
  •         Tomato works well with basil

We are grateful to have Dr Ross come and help us set up our garden as we are able to use the plants in our cooking. Our vegetable patch is now thriving!

Nature Eco Stay

Nature, tranquility, relaxation, meditation, farm activities, trailer rides, freshwater crayfish , Dreamtime all adds up for the positive feedback that we get from Trip Advisor visitor comments.

We are all asking for some downtime and 5 star luxury doesnt always give it. We originated from Nature environment and from the comments we get it seems so important that we still experience this nature environment to keep our lives on a normal plateau.

Boshack simplicity in building a lifestyle endeavoring to depict our early settlers and whilst they didnt have a lot perhaps they had everything as we now experience a similar lifestyle.

Small periods of living off the land and what it can produce makes one feel so good without the preservatives and all the sugary enticing niceties.

The isolation gives the feeling of tranquility to the point thaq different levels of meditation are reached by being just in the environment, we are told. One of the best comradeship experiences came from a popular shoe Company group from Malaysia, was when the group huddled around the fire near the water, drinking champagne, under the stars.

Nature Play ground for children Perth Western Australia

Nature Play seems to be the best way to describe what our children are doing when spending time in a natural environment, away from their computers and TV’s. Lets see if this school holidays the children play more in a nature.

I have seen this first hand at Boshack Outback Eco Stay, the changes in the children from when they first arrive and within a couple hours they revert back to simple, creative child’s play.

Boshack is only 90 minutes from Perth city, so come up and immerse you and the children in nature, leave feeling refreshed with a sense of clarity that nature brings. Of course we can’t go to Boshack every weekend and school holidays, so let’s suggest ways of getting our children out and about and in touch with a natural environment everyday.
Some days it may mean the back yard, my kids are rugged up and outside at 7am each morning, while I get dressed and get their breakfast. My mindset around the cold mornings changed when I saw a documentary on a lady in Iceland that had her kids outside most of the day in temperatures way below 0. We just don’t have cold enough weather here in Perth. Boshack lakeside this school holidays is really special and you know you are alive when the sun peaks over the haze of the lake and the campfire is crackling, with the smell of the fresh country air and the children being in the most natural setting they could be.
